Age:  14 & up
Cost:  $240 tuition per year, paid in four $60 payments;
$15 copy/supply fee per year,  paid in one $15 payment
Text:  The Lively Art of Writing, by Lucile Vaughan Payne (mass market paperback), ISBN: 0451627121
Description: In this class, students will learn and practice the fundamental skills for writing a variety of essays.  Students will look at what an essay does, what a thesis is, how to develop and support a thesis, and how to deal with opposing arguments.  Techniques practiced will cover paragraph construction and transitions, introductions and conclusions, overall essay structure, and writing style.  While the focus will be on academic papers, including analytical, compare and contrast, and persuasive writing, we will also spend some time practicing other essay types: essay tests, college application essays, and the dreaded SAT/ACT essay.  Homework expectations: 1- 3 hours per week.  High School Credit: ½ to 1 full English credit.  Ultimately, this is determined by the parent, depending on the amount of time students devote to their homework and essays.
